If you are wondering why are sockets not working, the answer can be anything from a simple tripped breaker to a fault that needs urgent professional attention. The key is to work methodically and not guess, because socket faults can involve hidden damage, overloaded circuits, or unsafe wiring.

Some failures are minor. Others are the first sign of a bigger issue behind the wall or at the consumer unit. That is why a quick check matters, but so does knowing when to stop and call a qualified electrician.

Why are sockets not working in one room only?

When sockets stop working in just one room, the fault is often local to that circuit or part of it. A tripped MCB or RCD at the consumer unit is one of the most common causes. This can happen after too many high-load appliances are used at once, or when a faulty appliance causes the protective device to trip.

It is also possible that one damaged socket, loose connection, or failed spur has interrupted power further along the circuit. In many homes, sockets are linked together, so one poor connection can affect several outlets at once. That is why the nearest dead socket is not always the actual source of the fault.

If the room has recently had decorating work, shelving fitted, or any drilling into walls, cable damage is another possibility. Even a small screw into a hidden cable can cause intermittent or complete loss of power.

Common reasons sockets stop working

Repair or upgrade?

Sometimes the fix is simple. A damaged socket, failed accessory, or loose connection can often be repaired quickly. In other cases, the fault points to ageing wiring, overloaded circuits, or an outdated consumer unit that no longer suits the way the property is used.

That matters more now than it did years ago. Homes and businesses are asking more from their electrics – more devices, more kitchen loads, more office equipment, more charging points, and in many cases EV charging as well. If sockets are regularly tripping or struggling under demand, a repair may solve the immediate issue but not the underlying limitation.

A good electrician will tell you the difference. There is no benefit in overselling an upgrade when a targeted repair is enough, but there is also no value in patching a system that has clearly outgrown its original design.
