A light that flickers once might be nothing. A socket that feels warm every evening is not. Knowing how to spot electrical faults early can be the difference between a quick repair and a dangerous failure that disrupts your home or business.

Most faults do not announce themselves dramatically. They tend to show up as small changes – a breaker that starts tripping more often, a burning smell near a consumer unit, lights dipping when an appliance starts, or a switch that suddenly stops feeling right. Flickering or dimming lights

LED lighting can be slightly more sensitive, so the cause is not always dangerous, but it still needs checking if it keeps happening.

Warm sockets or scorch marks

Discolouration around a socket or switch is a clear warning sign. Brown marks, melting plastic, cracking faceplates or signs of scorching usually mean overheating has already occurred. Turn off the circuit if safe to do so and stop using that point immediately.

Burning smells or sparking

A brief tiny spark when plugging something in can happen occasionally. Large sparks, repeated sparking, or any smell of burning are not acceptable. The same applies if a switch flashes when used or a fitting smells hot after being turned on.

Electric shocks or tingling

Even a mild tingle from a switch, appliance or metal fitting should not be dismissed. It may suggest a problem with earthing, bonding or insulation. This is one of the more urgent signs because it points directly to shock risk.

Faults that are easy to misread

Some electrical issues look minor because the power is still on. A damaged socket may continue working. A lighting circuit with a loose connection may only fail occasionally. Outdoor wiring can seem fine until rain exposes the weakness.

Appliances can also muddy the picture. A fault may appear to be in the property wiring when the real problem is a kettle, washing machine, EV charger lead or extension reel. Equally, replacing an appliance does not solve anything if the fixed installation is the issue.

Extension leads are another common problem area. If a circuit is already under strain, adding more adapters and reels can hide the issue rather than solve it. The same goes for older properties where modern power demand has outgrown the original wiring.

If you manage a commercial unit, avoid temporary workarounds that leave staff using damaged outlets or poorly routed cabling. A quick patch can create a bigger liability later.
